In 1958, master butcher Eugen and his wife Martha Gstrein opened a small inn called “Speisehaus” with 18 guest rooms located above their butcher's shop. A few years later, Eugen and Martha renamed the small Speisehaus “Gasthof Grauer Bär”. Since then, there have been repeated extensions and renovations. In 1986, Eugen and Martha delivered the property to their eldest daughter Maria Schmisl, who took over the family business at the age of 34. She further expanded the hotel business in 1987 and 1991. At that time, a Chinese restaurant was also operated on the ground floor, which was very popular with both guests and locals.
In 2014, Hotel Grauer Bär was handed over to Mrs. Schmisl's daughter. Since then, the Gstrein family has continued to run the popular inn with great love and passion. Mrs. Gstrein, Mr. Gstrein and their youngest son are true all-rounders, while the eldest son devotes himself to his passion for cooking and serving his guests full of passion. In 2020, the eldest son's life partner joined the business and has since then supported the reception desk of Grauer Bär with a lot of love for her work.
Over the last 10 years, renovation work has been carried out continuously, but always with the aim to preserve the “old charm” of Grauer Bär which has been a family business for 66 years already. The hotel currently offers accommodation for about 100 guests in 44 cozy rooms and has around 200 restaurant seats.
